Science & Engineering Festival:Expert Lectures
In order to spread scientific knowledge and spirit, a series of lively and enlightening lectures on science were organized in nine days, which is another highlight of the Science and Engineering Festival of SHSID middle school. We had the honor to invite renowned experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, top universities, and educational institutions, to bring lectures on several professional fields such as zoology and botany, aerospace and energy, as well as liberal arts. Students learned the infinite charm of the scientific world from a close up perspective.
How do mosquitoes cause the spread of so many diseases? What are the methods of controlling mosquitoes? Mr.Wang Sibao raised and answered these questions that are familiar to us, and introduced a plan to “cure” instead of exterminating mosquitoes that modern scientists are working on. The lecture “Anecdotes from the Plant World” delivered by Mr.Chao Daiying, was full of names for many plants that few people may have even heard of. Students learned that plants have different characteristics to allow them to adapt to their environment or resist the attack of foreign and other creatures.
Mr. Li Xuwen introduced how marine life exists in our lives. Many marine organisms can be used in the research and development and production of health care products. Not only that, but marine organisms can also be used to make cosmetics and traditional Chinese medicine, anesthetics, and other various aspects. Mr.Mu Yang gave a lecture on aerospace and energy, introducing recent developments in four areas: genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, quantum chemistry, and controlled nuclear fusion. He further explained the difference between nuclear fission and fusion; the principles of nuclear fusion and nuclear fission; and, using nuclear fusion as a clean new energy solution, along with aeronautics and space science.
Mr. Liu Yuan’s speech—dolphins as food—was also fascinating. It reminded the audience of the quote—the world is big, and much different food exists! For example, there are many points to pay attention to in making or eating of pufferfish, from its physical, chemical and biological properties. Mr. Zhou Jiale gave students many examples related to our lives such as PCR, introduced the history of micro chips, and the principles behind them. Ms. Xie Qin introduced the difference between bacteria and viruses in detail. From herbal medicine to western medicine, Ms. Xie Qin’s lecture helped the audience understand the characteristics of important drugs in the history of medicine and their different effects on the human body.
Mr. Ding Guangji gave us two lectures on Shanghai’s gripping history and culture. He talked about some interesting cultural points, such as the meanings of common Shanghainese phrases, their pronunciation, and the quaint tales behind them, and Shanghai’s unique food culture. The lectures also introduced Shanghai’s historical background to the audience, as well as the influences on the Shanghainese dialect and food culture.
During the lecture, students learned facts and were filled with the infectious enthusiasm of the experts for science and research. We hope that the scientific spirit and the spirit of exploration and curiosity inside the students was invigorated.
