Assembly of Multilingual Enthusiasts

In 2017, the SHISD Linguistics Club was established in a diverse multilingual campus environment. With the Linguistics Club, members explore a variety of languages and cultural knowledge, deliberate on intricate linguistic phenomena, and solve linguistic puzzles. Besides, they devote themselves to spreading multilingual culture on campus.

Interviews of Multilingual Speakers

Students in SHSID possess different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The Linguistics Club identifies the stories behind the multilingual speakers and introduces the cultures behind the languages. During the 2021 school year, club members interviewed a native speaker of Flemish. The interview transcript was published in the official club WeChat account of “the SHISID Linguistics Club”, an account managed by club members to benefit students in understanding more about this beautiful language.

Undiminished Enthusiasm for Online Club Activities

On-campus activities

More than two months of online learning has not abated the enthusiasm of members to explore languages. Through online meetings, they exchanged ideas, studied one novel language after another together, deliberated on letters and pronunciation, considered logic and grammar, and tirelessly solved one puzzle after another. The members further wrote down the knowledge they gained as well as their thoughtful reflections, and published the articles on the official social media so that more people could get access to linguistic and cultural knowledge.

As a discipline that emphasizes the equal importance of arts and science, linguistics tests keen observation, rigorous mathematical logic, the ability of reasoning, and imagination. The Linguistics Club members will continue to explore and spread linguistic knowledge so that more people can experience the infinite glamor of languages.
