G6-7: English Speech Competition Final Round
On April 28th, Grades 6-7 held the much-anticipated, much-coveted, tremendous, awe-inspiring final round of the English Speech Competition! The contestants were passionate, and the audience was enthusiastic and focused.
Grade 6’s speech topics were based on the argumentative writing that students practiced in English class. They selected the topics closely related to their life and study, such as the use of mobile phones and social media, the arrangement of their school time, whether students should be paid for good grades, etc. The students expressed their viewpoints which showed their careful observation and thinking about life and the world. Grade 7’s speech topic was “the science within science fiction.” Through extensive reading and in-depth investigation, students researched how science fiction writers are futurists.
Over the past few weeks, G6-7 students have been working tirelessly to refine, translate, and review their fantastic speeches. They had the first and second round, then had the 12 lucky finalists who performed their speeches for the pleasure of the entire 6th and 7th grades. Students began by watching the speech videos made by the finalists and they then had the opportunity to vote on their favorite speaker at their level. The votes will be tallied and checked, and teachers will announce the winners in English class next week.
This online competition is novel in form and full of challenges for the participants. Owen 7(5) said, “I feel both happy and grateful for making it to the finals. It was tough drafting the speech to ensure I could keep within the time frame and deliver the key message. In the end, I managed to do it by continuous practice.” Maximus 7(1) also expressed his gratitude to those who helped him with his presentation. Through this process, he gained much more confidence and improved a lot. He hopes that everyone enjoyed his speech. Eric 6(11) feels that knowing how to make speeches is certainly a gift: posture, volume, hand gestures, eye contact, none of them are easy.
The students have all been very enthusiastic about the speech contest since they first found out about the event. They spent time diligently preparing and practicing their English skills and not only for their scores. . As the twenty-ten generation, this speech competition allowed them to express their feelings and ideas and appreciate the platform the school gave them to speak freely. Nora 6 (3) thinks that this speech contest helped her gain a lot and she thanked the school for giving her the opportunity to express herself. She hopes that more students can participate in this activity in the future.
This English speech competition not only encouraged students to actively express themselves in English but also exercised their ability to think independently and study deeply about a given topic. Thank you to all the teachers and students who participated and contributed to this event, which added fun to students’ online learning and helped them to achieve personal growth.
