Middle School Section: SMICMUN

April 25, 2022

On April 23, 2022, SHSID students in the Model United Nations (MUN) club attended the 2022 SMICMUN conference online. After facing a couple of canceled conferences due to COVID, the students were beyond excited to compete in the second Model United Nations conference this school year. They were joined by students from several other schools, all eager to participate and spend a day as a delegate of an illustrious country. The delegates of SHSID all worked together with peers from both their own school and others and brought home several awards along with a well-treasured experience.

Over the course of Saturday, as both an individual and part of a team, students represented their countries and gave potential solutions to tackle some of the world’s most pressing issues, ranging from the Ukraine crisis to mitigating the effects of future pandemics. They proposed their ideas, cooperated with nations with similar interests, and brainstormed effective ways to control casualties and prepare aid. During the process, SHSID students all eagerly participated in debate and discussion, successfully securing several leading positions in each committee. Even the students that hadn’t attended any conferences before were active and tried their very best.

Numerous SHSID students achieved individual awards at the conference, including Most Improved Delegate for Chelsea 8(10) and Jeffrey 8(8), and Most Passionate for Sophia 8(5) and Albert 7(6), successfully bringing back nearly half of all the awards in the conference. Regardless of these welcome awards, all those that participated not only gained insight on the current events happening in the world, but also adopted leadership abilities and critical thinking skills as they collaborated with strangers to become independent thinkers that solve the problems of today.

Moreover, despite the conference being virtual, all students still had a profoundly good time and were still laughing and chatting with other delegates long after it had ended. These experiences not only fueled the participants’ love for MUN, but the memories will stay with them and help them become truly aware global citizens that will inspire change in the world.
