Puxi Campus Grade4-5: Geo World Fair

April 6, 2022

Although students in Grades 4 and 5 are studying online recently, this did not stop them from “traveling the world!” How did they do it? Because this year’s World Fair was moved online, and despite this, it was still a hit!

This week, students in grade 4 celebrated their Geography Fair with a “Where in the World Geography Bingo!” Each student chose a country they had never visited before and researched amazing and unique facts about the country by completing one box of their Bingo board each day. They find out about the countries by searching online, looking through relevant books, and discussing with their parents. The goal was to research their land and try to get a Bingo by completing five boxes vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Students got creative, and we learned new information about familiar countries such as Japan and Australia and lesser-known places such as Tanzania and Poland!

After completing the research, students made a collage displaying all their information. These collages represent not only the knowledge gained from researching a specific country but hope and excitement for future exploration of the world.

Fifth graders were given a region of the world according to their homeroom class to then choose a UNESCO World Heritage Site to research and present in an informative way of their choosing. With this, students begin to build a foundation for global citizenship and can demonstrate their geographical understanding.

Projects like posters, videos, articles, brochures, and more filled our Virtual Gallery Walk, where students were asked to view and comment on projects from different sites and regions. Students enjoyed getting to show off their work and getting to see the work of their peers! Many included very detailed responses about what they had carefully learned on each site and asked thought-provoking questions to the author.

Since their peers were able to see their feedback and reply, students were quite motivated to interact. This helped the students build relationships and understand how to communicate digitally. Students even had to problem solve technological challenges like how to upload certain file types in a forum post. All of which help them learn an essential lesson beyond just the classroom: how to become independent, lifelong learners!

Although the pandemic has prevented us from traveling and experiencing the world’s different natural and cultural landscapes, the online classes offer students the opportunity to travel the world in the “clouds” before they even move. We hope that the students will gain knowledge and happiness from this interesting geography project!
