High School Physics Department: Fermilab Webinar
On the morning of March 26, 2022, SHSID Grade 11 IB physics students attended the CMS particle physics masterclass organized by Fermilab. Mr. Kenneth Cecire from the University of Notre Dame and Ms. Maria Glover from Purdue University introduced students to new developments in particle physics. The instructors use an illustrative example to tie methods of presenting data that students are familiar with to cutting-edge research in particle physics completed at CERN in Switzerland. Eventually, the instructors connected the peaks seen in a simple histogram to the discovery of the Higgs boson.
Through this activity, students were able to advance their knowledge of particle physics, which they are currently learning in their curriculum, by understanding how research in particle physics is conducted. They also improved their ability to read graphs and perform data analysis. Furthermore, the students gained a valuable opportunity to interact with experts in particle physics education. They were also able to ask all sorts of questions about particle physics. The students raised insightful questions for the experts, showing their knowledge of the infinite possibilities within particle physics that can be the direction of future research.
