Middle School Math Department: Online Pi Day Carnival

March 18, 2022

The classes moved online recently, and yet that has not prevented the middle school students and teachers from celebrating Pi Day with activities on LinkedClassroom during the YD class on March 17th. To significantly increase participation, motivation, and fun, teachers gathered their knowledge and wisdom, studied carefully, selected a variety of unique and captivating math-related games, and take advantage of existing information technology, recreating the annual Pi Day carnival online.

These activities were mainly divided into two sections. The first section contained super fun math-related games played online. Students are free to choose from a wide variety of games, and parents are encouraged to play Pi Day games with their children. These games included tests for logical thinking like solving puzzles and finding logical bugs in three minutes, some exciting practice games such as water sorting, Rubik’s cube contest, 2048, and some memory challenges like guessing the mathematician, et cetera. The abundant and varied game content and exquisite layout design allowed students to experience a unique Pi Day online.

The second section encouraged students to actively participate in the celebration by uploading a video of them completing a Pi-related challenge, like memorizing digits of π or baking and eating an actual pie onto LinkedClassroom.

The more activities a student completed, the more stamps they could earn, which could be exchanged for little prizes designed especially for the occasion.

All in all, teachers found creative ways to make math fun and made sure the discovery of Pi online. And students motivated themselves to study and celebrate the contributions of mathematicians.
