Middle and Primary School English Department: Creative Writing in 1st Grade English Class
In English class, first grade students have been wrapping up our previous unit on “Let’s go to the Moon.” Using a combination of individual and group work, students could consolidate their vocabulary knowledge and check that we could use these words in sentences and spell them correctly. Students also enjoyed a creative freewriting session, in which students were given the freedom to create their monsters and write an accompanying story about them. This is a great way to practice our previously learned writing skills!
In March, 1st Grade students have started an exciting new unit, focusing on the famous author and poet Tomás Rivera. Using this story, students learned advanced new vocabulary words and their definitions. Students could stretch their brains and use our new vocabulary to create sentences all by themselves! We also expanded upon our existing knowledge by learning how to discern the author’s purpose and use pictures to help us understand the story.
Teachers and students in the first grade are so proud of their progress starting this new semester and excited to see what the following months bring!
