Puxi Campus Grade 3: Recycled Paper Driving Sustainability
Students and teachers are excited to be back at school and doing what we do best! The first two weeks of school have flown by, as we’ve been busy with many different activities and experiments.
Third graders have been learning about renewable and nonrenewable resources in science class. The children have continued to further their understanding of the importance of the three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle. At SHSID, students are encouraged to develop environmentally-conscious, sustainable habits that will help them to become global leaders in an ever-changing world. In week 2, we promoted this idea by tasking the students with creating a recycled paper of their own!
During the first few days back at school, we asked students to collect used sheets of paper rather than throwing the paper away. Once we had collected enough paper, we had students shred the paper into tiny bits. Then, we had the students put the paper into giant water bowls. The paper was left to soak overnight, and the next day, students enjoyed mashing and ripping the paper into a fine pulp. The enthusiastic students shaped the pulpy paper into a square and left it to dry on wax paper overnight. The children enjoyed this activity so much that they asked if they could make even more sheets of recycled paper! We encourage parents to recreate this activity at home with their children. It’s a quick, easy way to promote sustainability while having fun with the whole family. Way to go, G3 family!
