Ride the Wind and Waves: CVML Course
In a blink of an eye, the one-semester CVML course is about to end. Looking back on the course study from the past few months, the students have both gains and feelings. At the same time, they also achieved a higher proficiency on the computational-thinking ability.
As a lecture involving all the forefront technology, the CVML course builds up students’ logical-thinking ability, which is required when studying more advanced algorithms. It had a steep learning curve exceeding their expectations at the beginning of the course. The course included a brief history about information technology’s development throughout the past few centuries, some basic routing algorithms, the principles and applications of neural networks, and the computer-vision processing.
In the few lectures about visual algorithm, the teacher showed them how to perform image classification and specific object recognition step by step - feature perception, image preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection, prediction, and recognition - which deepened understanding on the facial-recognition system. They also learned preliminary frameworks and ways of computational thinking on the deep-learning system. The lecture also emphasized the importance of mathematics, which had been used as the basis of algorithms.
Although the course was challenging, the understandings on the field of artificial intelligence have been deepened and the students also have started to have a strong desire to reach further in this field. After the CVML course is over, they are planning to do some practices in deep-learning algorithm this winter vacation. They also hope that, in the future, CVML courses can provide them with more hands-on practice rather than just theoretical practice by talking about each algorithm. In this field of AI learning, there is a long way to go in the future, but they are not afraid of all these mountains and roads blocking their way.
