High School Math Grades 11-12 Open Classes
Upon the end of this semester, two teachers of the High School Math faculty gave an open class respectively for Grade-11 and -12 students.
Ms. Gao’s Grade-12 IB open class was on the Voronoi Diagram. She abstracted math models from different scenarios and guided the students to understand the process of abstraction and modeling. Ms. Gao motivated her students to look at an issue from multiple perspectives through a series of class activities. Students solved problems in a variety of ways and compared these methods to summarize the rule of thumb. Meanwhile, the use of technology in class has always been Ms. Gao’s specialty. The use of software programs was excellent too.
Ms. Li’s Grade-11 open class was on the practical use of math modeling and optimization. Students were grouped according to their field of interest, and studied optimization problems in physics, chemistry, biology, and economics, respectively. They wrote essays before the class and did presentations in class. After all the presentations, students summarized all the methods and made comparisons to further understand the essential idea of math modeling and its application in real life.
Both open classes were dedicated to guiding students to understanding the important ideas of math modelling, improving their capability to apply mathematical theories to solve real-life problems, motivating students’ interest towards math, and cultivating students’ critical thinking and diversified thinking.
