Middle and Primary School English Department: Exploring Your Writing Skills

December 27, 2021

During December, the first graders explored and developed into skillful writers. Our writing unit for December was comparative writing. The students were asked to notice and classify the similarities and differences of topics of their choice. In class, we readThe Ninja Bread ManandHow to Catch a Gingerbread Man.It was an exciting experience for the students, as they mastered and explained their thoughts and ideas. The students were introduced to many genres this month! The first-grade students read The Big Race, which is a story about staying determined and sharing your victories with others. The students also explored an informational text titledAnimal Groups.

Throughout December, the students have enjoyed writing in their Elf Journals. Each classroom was visited by one of Santa’s Elves. The Elf brought a story about kindness called,How Full is Your Bucket. The students took ownership of the elf by creating a special name and writing to the elf each day. This was an awesome opportunity for students to experience writing for a purpose.

Overall, it has been a merry and cheerful month so far. We look forward to watching our young writers and readers continue to perfect and adapt throughout the remaining months of the semester.
