Middle School Art Festival: Art and Harmony

December 27, 2021

On December 16th, at 12:50 PM, when the golden countdown number changed to zero, the Art Festival of the SHSID middle school section began! Based on the COVID-19 prevention and control work, the middle school launched a live broadcast online for parents to join virtually for the celebration. Mr. Liu Lian, middle and primary school principal, and Mr. Shen Tianyuan, middle and primary school principal’s assistant and director of grades 6-8, watched the wonderful performances with the students together.

Different from art festivals in previous years, the 2021 Art Festival incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and presented the grand theme of “Art and Harmony” with the perspective of “A Community of Shared Future for Mankind.” Divided into three chapters, “Man and Culture,” “Eco and Planet,” “Peace and Prosperity.” the performances not only conveyed the charm of art but also promised a deeply immersive experience through the background screen, videos, and interactive puzzle games to promote harmony on earth.

In the opening video, the blue planet was rotating slowly, and people were living in the vast land. All of the scenes prompted students to consider: How do the various actions of people impact the planet? How can we achieve the goal of sustainable development?

Human beings have created a splendid civilization in thousands of years of history and lived with rich cultural heritage. Today’s children, they inherit the human cultural heritage and will continue to create their own culture in the future. In the first chapter “People and Culture,” the students enjoyed “Wind of Provence” from the Wind Ensemble, a Peking Opera Song “Ode to pear blossom” from Yu Yin Club, “We Are the World” using sign language, as well as pop dances “La Lisa” and “Black Mamba,” instrumental ensemble “Senbonzakura,” Chinese classical dance “Fantasy Chang'an,” and so on. Students showcased numerous talents with their dazzling performances.

The second chapter “Eco and Planet” focused on environmental protection. CARDIAC service learning group from grade 8 addressed the concern about resource conservation and environmental protection. They used various recyclable materials to make a fish’s tail, bird wings, a mushroom-shaped hat, and other inventive clothes, and their teachers put on all the fancy clothes, presenting an eco-fashion show. Then, there came a comical cross-talk “The Animation In the Childhood” from grade 7 students took us to the fond childhood memories. When grade 6 students went on the stage playing the flute, the beautiful Chinese-style music suddenly swelled through the auditorium. In addition, songs and dances such as “Victory” and “Happy Planet” allowed the students to enjoy the music together with the performers on stage. Where does happiness come from? There is only one Earth, the beautiful and shared family for mankind. Only by protecting the environment, cherishing resources, and maintaining harmonious coexistence between mankind and nature, can we not only keep good memories but also live a happy life in the future.

In the third chapter “Peace and Prosperity,” students reveled in the “art and harmony” through different programs. The song “Sisi Sote” by the Chorus presented amazingly tuned harmonies. The dynamic dance “The Invincible” from the SPDC club ignited the excitement of the audience. The foreign teachers staged a performance of the “Festival Songs” and triggered the cheerful atmosphere of Christmas. The last performance “You Raise Me Up,” featuring the string orchestra and Chinese teachers, added a warm and moving melody to the festival.

Two lucky draws were conducted between thechapters. The lucky students received a gift package, so did the students who solved the puzzles about the Sustainable Development Goals. There are the bestsingers, the best dancers, and the mosttalented shiningstarson the stage ofthe 2021 Art Festival. The amazing performancesdelighted thestudentsthatlookedforward to the upcoming Christmas and New Yearandleft thema fewinspiringquestions like“what kind of future do we want to have?” As responsible global citizens, our middle school students work hard and call for taking action to achieve the goals of sustainable development of the United Nations. When the sun rises on a new day, we all will have a bright future.
