High School Teachers Set Their Eyes on "Communication" on Professional Development Day
On December 22, 2021, all local teachers from SHSID high school participated in the Professional Development Day at the end of 2021.
—— The "Grass Cup" Forum——
The first part of the event was the yearly "Grass Cup" forum. The theme of this year was "communication". In the Xianmian Annex auditorium, representatives from five core functional departments shared their insights and cases about communication.
Director Liu Qin of the High School Student Affairs Center talked about effective communication with students, encouraging teachers to read and understand students in multiple settings beyond the classroom through guiding club activities, participating in various subject days and/or sports events, and, in a sense, "playing" with the students to achieve truly effective communication.
Director Liu Shan of the High School Teaching Affairs Center summarized the communication channels and methods for teachers within the school as well as the ways different departments cooperate with each other.
High School Vice Principal Liu Min used the four key terms of sincerity, empathy, emotional management, and encouragement, as well as small cases to string together her thoughts on how teachers should communicate as educators, and then emphasized that good communication can only be achieved based on a teacher’s love and responsibility for the students.
Mr. Liao Hui first presented different departments’ tightly knit cooperation strategies on science and technology innovation guidance so that everyone could see that it is communication that allows various functional sectors to work together, pool resources, and stimulate the internal drive of students, and, ultimately, help them focus on their true interests and excel accordingly.
High School Vice Principal Zhang Li, from a college counseling perspective, conveyed to everyone the idea that every teacher should also be a mentor to help students realize their personalized development. And she hoped that high school teachers could make full use of the school’s online growth platform to be more informed about all students and help them make the most suitable choices for themselves.
After the five rounds of sharing, the awards session came, and High School Principal Ma Feng invited the award-winning teachers onto the stage with a unique and humorous introduction for each winner. A total of 29 teachers won the 11 awards to commend them for using their own ways to pursue excellence in their jobs.
—— Hybrid Subjects Activities——
Combining the theme of “communication”, the teachers then participated in one of the five events brought by teachers of different subjects.
The topic of the teacher debating contest was: "Should students choose their own homework based on their needs?" This topic fits the daily practice of the teachers. Ten teachers debated passionately and the audience also participated enthusiastically in the questioning session, putting forward their own views and questions, which triggered more in-depth thinking on homework’s nature and students’ development.
The Chinese Knot lecture dived into culture and craftsmanship, allowing the audience to understand that the Chinese knot is knitted with one thread from beginning to end and each basic knot is named according to its shape and meaning. It has rich artistic and cultural value and embodies people’s good expectations of life.
The Breathing and Rhythm lecture led everyone to explore how the body can communicate in the form of music, and let everyone understand that music, a "nonverbal" communication method, has a strong emotional and rhythmic nature. Through music, humans use their voice, sound, language, and body posture to express rich emotions.
The Use of Go-Pro in Swimming Teaching lectures captured detailed data through high-tech methods, allowing the participants to experience the possibilities of swimming teaching in a refreshing way.
Uncovering the Secret Code presented the relationship between language, text, and numbers from the perspective of mathematics, and introduced the essence of information communication from the perspective of cryptography.
In the diverse and useful activities of this career development day, high school teachers experienced and thought about the roles and methods of communication in education from multiple angles, and they also gained new knowledge in a specific professional field. Everyone will be able to bring better communication to work with the gains and thoughts of this activity, and meet the upcoming final work and the challenges of 2022 with renewed strength and enthusiasm.
