Middle School Biology Department: Little Quails, Big Fun
The lucky students in grades 5 & 6 who chose Weird Science as their optional class were in for a treat this month. On December 17th, they received the quails that they have been looking forward to for such a long time, which quickly become the talk of the whole grade.
This experiment lasted a total of twenty days. On November 24th, students first received their quail eggs. Then the eggs were put into the incubator. Ms. Chen and Ms. Hu from the middle school biology department took care of them. Every time those students saw their teachers on campus, they asked the same question— “Have the quail hatched yet?” They were very eager to get a “Yes” back.
On December 2nd, we shined a light on the eggs and observed the current development. We were ecstatic to see blood vessels and beating hearts appear. The second observation was conducted on December 8th. We knew that we were one step closer to successful hatching when darker shadows occupied the majority of the space of the eggs. Our incubator attracted many students’ attention at the Puxi Campus grade 4-5 Science Fair. Students surrounded the incubator as they asked all kinds of questions.
On December 10th, the first quail came to the world unexpectedly. The office exploded with students and teachers visiting the quail. The peak of hatching appeared in the coming two days. More and more students came to catch a glimpse of these newly born quail. They all wanted to raise one. The teachers could only tell them that all the quails already had owners. The quails attracted so many fans who are surely going to sign up for Weird Science next semester.
This hatching experiment delivered students a great sense of achievement. Taking care of the quail helped the students to become more responsible. They will develop good scientific practices, such as careful observation and critical thinking. We wish all the quails grow up and live healthy and happy lives!
