Pudong Campus Grade 1: The Beautiful Chinese Character
To let the students feel the unique beauty of Chinese characters in their daily life, the teachers from grade one at Pudong Campus assigned a special Chinese project to the students to do—The Beauty of Chinese Characters. This project is divided into two parts: making a poster and doing a presentation. Students need to choose a Chinese character from their name and write it neatly on the poster. Then, they need to communicate with their parents about the meaning of the characters. Finally, students will draw a picture of the Chinese characters according to their meanings. After the poster was done, it was the presentation part. Students brought their “paintings” to school and did a presentation about them in Chinese class on Dec.20th.
Every student did a very good job and impressed the teachers a lot. A student introduced the character “bing” (ice) which is related to water; a student who has the last name “wang” explained the relationship between “wang” (the king) and emperors. What impressed the teacher most was that a student used an ancient poem to describe and explain the meaning of the character “Hua” in her name.
After the presentation, students said that they enjoyed the beautiful and creative pictures of Chinese characters. The special project not only deepens students’ understanding of Chinese characters but also makes them feel the elegance and beauty of it.
