Primary School Subjects Deparment: I Am a Young Zoologist

December 14, 2021

During week 15, in the Grade 1 science classes, the students were introduced to the idea of placing and organizing animals into different groups.

The students learned and practiced the concept of “classify,” as a way for scientists to organize all animals into useful groups. They learned that the main difference animals have between themselves will relate to differences in their reproduction strategies, key physical features, and what they need to survive.

The students had the opportunity to look at different parts of animals as if they were scientists observing animals up close. They then decided for themselves how to classify each creature into scientific groups like mammals and amphibians. Students especially enjoyed working together in teams and discussing how best to place each animal into their respective groups.

This unit built upon previously learned knowledge about what animals need to survive. The young zoologists are now working as experts.
