Grades 9-10: English Speech Contest

December 10, 2021

During the CAS periods in the afternoon of December 8th, all members of ninth and tenth grades marched toward the auditorium of the primary school building on the other side of the campus. The annual English speech competition is a precious chance for them to hear about fun, unique topics from their peers.

Introduced by Mr. Roberts and Erika, the speech competition invited the contestants to answer the question of “Why should I care?” . Each contestant prepared a speech to convince the audience why they should consider a thing, an activity, or an idea important. Topics ranged from the serious ones to the more creative, lighthearted ones. Andy and Steve reinforced the importance of education and college application to the freshmen and sophomores in the audience. Jina introduced an entertaining TV series she’s recently watched, “Squid Game.” Daniel and Leo presented and encouraged more people to know about their habits, including drama, painting, and dancing. Other topics that incorporate psychological and social aspects include social equality, depressive emotions, misleading information, and the deteriorating movie culture. Some of these topics provoked the audience’s thoughts, some were very informative, and some were able to fill the whole auditorium with laughter. Regardless of the results of the competition, everyone indeed gained a lot from it.
