Middle School Chinese Department: G6 Native Chinese Science Fiction Activity “From the Past to the Future”
Free from the image of the “slower pace of life in the past,” the fast-paced modern society makes life faster and more convenient. In face of this trend, not only the necessities of life but also many other aspects are changing rapidly. Perhaps, shortly, things we take for granted would become a new history, and “impossibilities” in our imagination would evolve into realities. Last week, the middle school grade 6 Chinese teaching group held an event where students gave presentations on a theme of “From the Past to the Future,” helping them to feel the tremendous changes in history and envision the future based on the present and letting more students grasp the differences between the past and the present. Meanwhile, this activity allowed them to travel across time and have a dialogue with the future utilizing their infinite imagination .
To help the activity run smoothly, teachers of the middle school Chinese department introduced the theme to students at the preliminary stage and guided them to choose one from topics like transportation, styles of clothing, the ways how people interact with others, and lifestyles. Students were required to collect relevant information and interpret their outlook on the future according to their understandings and imagination. The teachers also encouraged students to express their views by presenting pictures, photos, or drawings. Gaining a holistic view of the theme, students showed great enthusiasm and were eager to exchange ideas with each other. They also started to develop their conceptions of what the future will be like.
In the presentation session, the various posters by students reflected the development and changes of things over time. They also developed profound thoughts of future life by the different needs of people in the present time. For instance, some students analyzed the shortcomings of previous cars and summarized how the cars improved so far. Based on their findings, those students designed new cars that are more environmentally friendly and powered by solar and wind energy. These innovative ideas not only showcase the wild imagination of students but also reveal students’ humanistic concern for society. Through this activity, students could learn how to look at the old things from a new perspective and how to create and imagine the future life based on the present as well. We believe that the students can perceive the changes in society with time through the journey of “From the Past to the Future.” In addition, students could have more expectations for the future amid changes.
