Grade 7: Display the Beauty of Chinese Language, Demonstrate the Thoughts of Youths’ Mind—Chinese Speech and Debate Contest
On the afternoon of December 2, 2021, the 7th grade held Chinese speech and debate contest during the youth development class.
First is the Chinese speech final. After several rounds of fierce class selection, 10 outstanding students in grade 7 were among the finals. Students take “... is not easy” as the starting point and share their common thoughts and attitudes towards the difficulties in life. For example, 7-2 Kai started with his own experience and shared his tips on weight loss; 7-7 Ryan led everyone to review Academician Yuan Longping’s life and other brilliant achievements and encouraged today’s teenagers to maintain a persistent and enterprising spirit. The contestants’ logical expression and glamorous speech posture were unanimously affirmed and praised by the judges and teachers.
The next is the highly speculative debate competition. The debate topic is “the advantages and disadvantages of ‘assimilation.’” The claim side debaters are: 7-6 Sarah, 7-7 Sophie, 7-3 Paris, and 7-10 Spring. The counterclaim side debaters are: 7-3 Milly, 7-1 Alex, 7-8 Nancy, and 7-10 Joy. The contestants had a heated debate, and each of them performed brilliantly. Their quick responses and rigorous speculation attracted the full attention of the audience, and the teachers also gave their praises. After the debate, the judges asked questions to the pro and con sides, which aroused the reflection of the whole audience and pushed the whole competition to the highest point. The whole competition was coherent, wonderful, and new ideas emerged one after another. Everyone has learned something from this activity.
The candidates of the speech and debate contest experienced a lot of polishing, repetition, and modification before the contest. In this process, they not only implemented the concept of independent learners but also really realized the meaning of teamwork. The students said, “this contest is of great significance to them.” How to think systematically and express their ideas properly, these are knowledge worth learning throughout everyone’s life.
In the final award ceremony, the first, second, and third prize winners of personal speeches, excellent debaters, the best debaters, and the best debate team came to the stage one after another to receive the awards. The students all expanded their learning horizons in this event and gained full motivation for future learning.
