Middle School Chinese Department: “Hello China”—The First G7 Non-native Chinese Recitation Competition
The first “Hello China” Chinese Recitation Competition was held on December 1st at the Zhongxing building theater. This contest aims to enrich the campus experience, foster good reading habits, and improve the overall language abilities of non-native Chinese-speaking students. Studying authentic Chinese materials and reading aloud in Chinese will expose students to the exquisite stress and flow of the Chinese language and the energy and fun within the reading.
Several weeks before the competition, students of all language levels had already been reading aloud in Chinese with the guidance of their Chinese teachers. Whether during the class or outside the classrooms, you could see students gather and practice tongue twisters, poems, stories......Some students became interested in various texts while reading aloud, they decided to search for other resources to better understand the materials, and some students discussed and shared with their friends. For the students, the competition had been ideal, for it enabled them to read and learn what they wanted. The competition has two phases, the first phase is Individual/Group Reading Aloud Videos Submission and the second phase is the Team Recitation Competition. To participate in the individual/group reading video competition, students chose their partners and materials and record themselves. Everyone was looking forward to this competition, devoted to reading and infusing the video with as much creativity as possible.
On the day of the show, the grade seven students from non-native Chinese classes gathered to appreciate the power of recitation conveyed in Chinese. Starting from today’s schedule introduced by two student hosts, the event comprised two major sessions—Team Recitation Competition and the Awarding Ceremony. Everyone burst into laughter while watching the “Hello China” and the “collection of individual/group reading” videos. Afterward, four teams by classes of different language levels brought their performances. The “超级To-ma-to” team recited the “Unchosen Road” with superb power. Matching with the music, the “We Love Taco Bell” team’s “Southern Night” conveyed the emotion within the lyrics. “As I Began to Love Myself” delivered by the “十个李白” team touched and inspired the audience, and the “燃烧吧小猪佩奇” team’s adapted “Surpass Yourself ” made everyone feel the performers’ thoughts. The students played with confidence and demonstrated their extraordinary Chinese abilities, drawing admiring applause from the audience. Mr. Ni, director of middle and primary school teaching affairs center, gave out compliments to the students on their performances and confidence. He encouraged students to continue to read in Chinese and speak the language.
The following Tongue Twister Challenge captured many of the happiest faces of students and teachers. You could see students actively participate in the challenges and volunteer to read the funniest and most difficult Chinese tongue twisters.
