Middle and Primary School English Department: Primary English Classes

December 2, 2021

During November, the first-grade students at Shanghai High School International Division were busy developing their reading and writing skills. This month, the students were introduced to new genres. The new genres being covered were informational texts and folktales.

“How the Leopard Got His Spots” was a folktale that taught the students a meaningful lesson at the end. “At Home in the Ocean” was an informational text full of useful facts about the ocean’s habitat. The first-grade students are learning and practicing how to make connections to what they are reading. It has been a joy watching the students make text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to-world connections. As independent learners, the first graders have practiced self-management through the application of their new strategies in” just right” books.

Our writing unit in November was writing friendly letters. The students wrote letters to parents, pen-pals, and teachers. It was an awesome opportunity to learn and write with fellow first-grade students. Overall, it has been a fabulous month with lots of new English strategies being added to our learning tool belt.
