2021 SHS & SHSID Bilingual Debate Competition

December 2, 2021

To better enhance the mutual learning between the local and international divisions, and fully cultivate students’ critical-thinking ability, Shanghai High School has established the bilingual debate competition since 2017. The competition, participated by students from both SHS and SHSID, has become a highly anticipated branded student activity during the autumn season each year. On December 1st, 2021, teachers and students from both divisions gathered together in the Lecture Hall of Zhentao Building to witness the final showdown.

As ever, each team of the pros and cons is composed of 2 students from the international division and 2 students from the local division. However, in this competition, consulting and crossfire periods have been newly added to inspire students' response capacity.

The bilingual debate competition has attracted many new debaters and also allowed more students to enjoy the experience of participating in the feast of thinking. As the fourth opposition speaker, Herlin from SHSID grade 10 said, “There is no end to debating, and it is always refreshing through the practice; the principle is not constrained, as only the integration of various thoughts will lead to a comprehensive perception."

The topic of this final competition was “Do the Job You Love” or “Love the Job You Do”, and both teams delivered an exciting and fabulous performance.

After the debate, the judges and guests brought brilliant and cheerful comments to the speakers and audience. The 7 judges on the panel included Chinese and foreign teachers from SHS and SHSID and guests from the media industry. Ms. Dong Qing, the renowned CCTV hostess, said she was impressed by the debaters’ performance since they were not only fluent bilingual communicators but critical thinkers. She meticulously commented on every excellent moment on the stage, which encouraged our young debaters. Also, she shared her own experience in explaining the relationship between “love” and “do” the job, to inspire the audience to be self-motivated.

In the end, the “con” side won the fifth bilingual debate championship. Ms. Shu Xing, the director of SHS teaching department, and Mr. Ma Feng, the principal of SHSID High School, presented awards to the champion and runner-up students. Elaine from the “pro” side won the title of best debater with her wonderful performance and calm expression.

The Fifth Shanghai High School and Shanghai High School International Division Bilingual Debate Competition successfully came to an end. We look forward to the participation of more teachers and students in the future, and using this as an effective method, we will continue to strengthen the mutual learning and cultural integration of the two divisions, and strive to be "a World Top Research- and Innovation-Based Chinese School of Primary Education".
