Grade 6: Career Day Lectures
My conquest is the sea of stars;dream itpossible
As students slowly become more mature, each person will have their own life in the future with the pace of time. Sixth-grade students are growing and learning how to become independent learners. At the same time, they also begin to germinate curiosity for their possible future careers and conceive how to achieve their dreams. To help students open their eyes to the vast world, on November 25th, four parents were invited to introduce their careers and share their work experiences during youth development class.
These four parents work in IT, market consulting, and even more different occupations. The first parent who gave a lecture, Mr. Yan, is engaged in information technology consulting. He introduced how information technology consulting can help people use information technology to change the world and make it a better place. He asked students to think about examples of technology changing lives. Our food and clothing, work and entertainment, education and health, and other fields have been changed a lot due to technological progress. Students can also bring change into the world in the future with hard work.
The second parent was an exceptional teacher: Teacher Mandy. She showed some pictures of her work and asked the students to guess her occupation. It turned out that Ms. Mandy teaches others how to present, sell, and negotiate. She introduced the 3V skills used in presentations. The 3V stands for visual, vocal, and verbal. When presenting—through eyes, gestures, and other visual movements and expressions, volume, speed, and tone changes, plus language and text and other content—we can better attract the audience’s attention. These skills also can be applied to student presentations.
The other two parents were from marketing-related occupations. Ms. Zhang described what marketing is and what modern marketing and a marketer look like in the digital age. Mr. Rao introduced how marketing research helps businesses understand the market and their consumers. He used a game to show how he allows enterprises to design good products to meet consumer needs through surveys, data analysis, and other methods. In this process, curiosity, logical thinking, an open mind, and accountability are fundamental, which are also essential characteristics in academic studies.
The students thanked the parents for their wonderful sharing with warm applause. Through these Career Day lectures, the close communication between parents and students opened up a broad vision to students and encouraged them to develop a new direction of thinking about their future. To make their dreams come true, students need to study hard and become qualified independent learners. As one parent mentioned at the end of his lecture, “I hope that students will ‘enjoy every step of the way,’” because each concrete step will lead you to your future goals.
