Grade 7: Youth Development Class—Independent Learner Experience Sharing
On Thursday, November 2021, all 7th-grade students gathered in their homeroom during the two Youth Development classes to listen to some Independent Learning presentations. Becoming an independent learner is a concept that is greatly focused on this semester as the school assists students on their road to graduation and future success, and the school wanted to assess and comprehend students’ current application and understanding of independent learning to help them further. To do so, each homeroom teacher selected a handful of students to make a presentation and share the methods they take to achieve Independent Learning.
Many students focused on how they studied for the Midterm Examinations and if their results reflected the hard work they put in or made them satisfied. Other students shared the methods they use for day-to-day studying and how to consistently be an Independent Learner, like goal setting, the Pomodoro Method, and connecting different subjects to create a deeper understanding of both. The last important thing the students shared was how they reached out to teachers for help when they ran into problems. They explained under which situations should students immediately ask teachers about their difficulties to prevent future confusion, and when it is acceptable to ask peers, students, and friends for help on some homework assignments, or to discuss, etc.
After the Youth Development sessions, students all found new ways to improve their study methods and long-term solutions to the current problems they were facing regarding grades, having learned various tips and tricks from their classmates. Teachers also understood the student’s key takeaways from the newly implemented Independent Learning course and are starting to find new ways to enhance students learning based on the current knowledge they can apply already. The students will grow after this experience, and the teachers look forward to seeing it!
