Middle School Section: Chinese and English Debate Competition

November 28, 2021

On the afternoon of November 25th, the Shanghai High School International Division and the East Shanghai High School provided 8 debaters in all to participate in a merger event, developing the students’ abilities in logical thinking and presenting, as well as further strengthening the two campus’s alliance. The debate took place in the Nianci Building with experienced judges present and was broadcast live to students all over the campus, who watched the event with great enthusiasm and excitement. After composing numerous topics and carefully selecting, the motion––the subject of the debate––was decided to be “Resolved: Schools should use E-books instead of traditional printed textbooks” and “Whether online education should become the development direction of future education,”two educational topics applicable in school life, with numerous layers to discuss. The students of the two campuses grew up together in the debate and formed a deep friendship since the last experience. A battle kicked off. Let’s go to the scene to find out!

The event started with a Chinese debate. Compared to last year, the performance of the SHSID debaters is obviously calmer and wiser. They talked about the convenience, possibilities of individual education brought by online learning. The whole game was interlocked and wonderful. With new ideas emerging one after another, the debate raised rounds of laughter and applause from the audience. Judges from two campuses also gave inspiring speeches, providing new perspectives on this issue and encouraging students to keep their passion for debate.

Next was the intense and speculative English debate competition. There were two teams in this event, one agreeing with the motion and one against it. Each team consists of two students from SHSID and two from the East Campus, once again promoting and reinforcing the bond and friendship between these essential bodies of a unified school. From logical arguments revolving eyesight and economic factors to relatable examples of school life and dramatic mentions of human extinction, the event was packed with informative and entertaining contentions; it was the consensus that the debate was an enormous success. “This event made me more big-brained,” said Enos 7(1), the second speaker of the affirmative team. “I had to practice for hours and wear an uncomfortable suit, but it was totally worth it,” said Amy 8(1), the third speaker of the affirmative team.

Looking back on the whole event, the speakers’ broad vision and rich knowledge are impressive. We are looking forward to seeing each other again in the next debate!
