Grade 1: “Eggcellent” Parent

November 26, 2021

The “Eggcellent Parent” activity has already become a tradition in grade one of SHSID and is greatly liked and popularized among the previous grade-one students. When fragile eggs encounter the lively, vigorous students, can you guess what will happen?

From November 11th, every first grader adopted an egg baby and then lived their life together for over a week. The students put their egg baby gently into the “home” created and decorated beforehand and needed to bring it to school every day from Nov.11 till Nov.17. To ensure their egg baby was safe and sound while doing different activities, all the first graders tried their utmost to protect their egg baby so that it didn’t crack. There were various types of homes: a sponge box tightly twisted, a mini-princess bedroom with abundant decorations, a DIY cradle with recycled gloves...some even applied make-up to their egg babies!

Over the past week, all first graders developed an intimate and inseparable relationship with their egg baby. They did practically everything together, such as going to school, having meals, taking a bath, sleeping, and so on. Some even carried their egg baby when shopping in the supermarket or even going to amusement parks! Much to our delight and surprise, to protect their egg babies, students would slow down substantially while pulling their backpacks. They would also leave more space while lining up as well! They were very enthusiastic and also cautious. For those who succeeded in looking after their egg every day of the challenge, they received a certificate and a special prize to congratulate them for being good and responsible parents. This activity was also integrated into both IT and English classes. All students finished a booklet or an e-book with the Book Creator App and introduced to their peers the merry time they had spent with their egg baby.

This whole process has always challenged first graders. There were touching moments, along with regretful times. Through this experience, all children learned how to take care of the egg baby and also more readily appreciate their parents’ love and hard work. We hope the sense of love and responsibility will carry them forward and help them build up a better awareness and respect towards all life.
