Puxi Campus Grades 4-5: Chinese Character Competition

November 24, 2021

Heros have gathered, and warriors are ready for the final round of the Chinese Character Competition. On November 18, students gathered in the auditorium at the Puxi campus, singing the theme song of the competition written by Chinese teachers. With the warm atmosphere, we welcomed the 2021 Chinese Character Final Competition of Grades 4-5.

Each fourth and fifth-grade class selected two students in the pre-contest and regrouped into a 4-person team to participate in the competition. There were three rounds of competition, testing participants’ knowledge of character components and structures, meanings and connotations, and context analysis. Not only were the students on the stage engaged in the games, but the rest of the students were also very excited about the various games and actively participated throughout the competition by writing down answers on the answer sheets.

The first round of games tested students’ familiarity with the characters’ writing, meaning, and oral expression. Students needed to guess the complete idioms and phrases from the characters which have parts missing. In the game “You Say I Guess,” students used words to explain the phrases so that their teammates could guess the phrase. The challenging part is that students cannot use the words in the phrase; otherwise, they would lose points.

After two rounds of warm-up, here came the actual competition. How many characters can you write that have the radical of water? Adding one more stoke to the character “日(sun),” what characters can you make? What characters can you get after moving one component of the original character? After hearing these questions, students immediately wrote down their answers on their answer sheets. The competition also tested students’ ability to apply words in daily life situations, such as finding out the miswritten character in the advertisements and brainstorming idioms with food. Making pauses in unpunctuated sentences was a fun part for the audience present, for it created many exciting sentences. You may also want to give it a try!

The final round was the most competitive part. In the tense atmosphere, the last four teams competed for the champion. According to the clues and the video about the evolution of characters, the team who said the correct character first won the points. Finally, after three rounds of fierce competition, Team 6 (4-6 Souta, Miumiu, 5-3 Sophie, 5-8 Christopher) won the champion of the 2021 Chinese Character Competition champion! In the exciting cheering, Ms. Liu Fang, the middle and primary school vice principal, awarded the trophy to the champions.

One word, one world; one stroke, one universe. Through the engaging activities, students appreciate the beauty of the Chinese characters and keep the essence of the Chinese culture in mind. Students, all the great representatives of the Chinese character, see you next year!
