Grade 6: Puberty Lecture and Mental Health in Youth Development

November 24, 2021

Adolescent children are in the stage of continuous changes in their physiology and psychology. To teach students about the characteristics of adolescence and help them face these changes correctly, grade 6 introduced adolescence in the youth development class on November 18.

Firstly, Ms. Gu, the head of the high school Biology Department, gave a lecture about puberty. She introduced what puberty is, what changes occur during puberty, how the reproductive system works, and how students should take care of their changing bodies. These physiological changes are normal, said Ms. Gu. Students should learn to face and accept these changes calmly. Ms. Gu also introduced tips for taking care of changing bodies such as showering daily, eating a well-balanced diet, doing activities and exercises, and having enough sleep. In the end, Mr. Gu played an interesting video and read a poem about puberty and how teenagers should be proud of the changes their bodies will undergo. The Q&A session during the lecture attracted active participation and the students who answered the questions received notebooks!

In addition to physical changes, psychological changes are also very important. Students spend a lot of time at school and doing school-related tasks. How should students manage time and develop a healthy school-life balance? Teachers asked students to reflect on their time and emotional management through a game by answering questions such as “Do you have enough time to spend with your loved ones and hobbies?” “Are you satisfied with your time management?” and “Do you have effective ways to help yourself release stress?” If feeling stressed, students can talk with friends, family, teachers, and trusted organizations. If students feel emotional or are in a bad mood, they should try not to react immediately and instead calm down by taking deep breaths, doing grounding exercises, or meditating.

Throughout Ms. Gu’s lecture and the later game, students were able to learn about puberty and the importance of mental health. They were able to reflect on their relationship with family and school life and accept the changes that their bodies will go through. They learned how puberty is something that everyone will go through. They also thought about how to improve their time management during the mental health game and develop strategies to release stress. With help from their teachers and family, our sixth graders will grow up healthily and happily.
