Middle School Biology Department: Wonders in Weird Science

November 22, 2021

The lucky students who chose Weird Science as their optional class embarked on a fantastic journey this semester.

Science in daily life

Students made pH indicators using purple cabbage and rose petals to test the acidity and alkalinity of vinegar, soda water, coke, soapy water, and other common liquids in our daily lives. Students were quite excited to see the liquids turn different colors. At that moment, they realized that science truly was present in everyday life.

Little archaeologists

Students got the chance to become archaeologists using hammers, chisels, and brushes to reveal the fossils. They assembled their dinosaur models and shared them with others. Through the process, students learned about the main traits of the tyrannosaurus, diplodocus, triceratops species and also realized some hardships of being an archaeologist.

DIY leaf bookmarks

Students made leaf bookmarks in a series of steps. They first walked onto campus and identified various plants to learn about the main types of leaves and found suitable leaves to make bookmarks. They then carefully removed the mesophyll and dyed the veins. They also decorated their works with drawings and tassels. On November 10, students received their completed bookmarks. They were so excited to use them in the books they read this month.

There is so much fun happening in Weird Science class. During the next few weeks, we will hatch eggs, culture crystals, make homemade soap, make water rockets, and so much more. Don’t miss your opportunity next semester to sign up for Weird Science!
