Middle School Chinese Department: G6 Native Chinese Calligraphy Competition

November 22, 2021

“As a sublime form of cultural inheritance, handwriting embodies the essence of living beings.” Appreciated as one of the traditional Chinese cultural arts with a long history, “beautiful handwriting” has been a critical criterion to evaluate a person. To inherit and promote this precious traditional Chinese art and to create a good learning atmosphere, the Middle School Chinese Department of SHSID held its annual handwriting competition last week. The activity was designed to help students develop good writing habits by copying classic poems and short texts and to promote traditional Chinese culture while showcasing the students’ calligraphy works.

After learning about the handwriting competition, students showed great enthusiasm for it and were eager to know the requirements to prepare and practice. On the contest day, all the students were attentive and serious about handwriting, including those who usually write sloppily. However, they changed from their usual writing to writing each stroke very carefully. In just forty minutes, everyone finished their work, and the result turned out to be quite satisfying. The Chinese department made a comprehensive evaluation of the collected works in terms of character structures and neatness of the sheets. Each class selected three of the best calligraphy works and presented them with awards of excellence. These outstanding works are now displayed on campus.

The writing competition has enriched the students’ cultural life, cultivated their interest in Chinese calligraphy, and raised their aesthetic ability to appreciate Chinese characters. As the saying goes, “Handwriting is the manifestation of a person’s knowledge and intelligence. In short, it helps shape what makes humans.” We believe that through this competition, students will be able to perceive the profound meaning of Chinese characters and upgrade their skills to learn and write Chinese characters in their future studies.
