Grades 1-3: Psychology Lecture “See the Child, See Yourself, Be a Wise Parent”
“How to become a smart parent” has been a topic that has attracted more and more parents’ attention. On this Thursday, the primary section grades 1-3 invited Dr. Wang Shanshan to speak to our interested parents. Dr. Wang, graduating from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a master’s degree in psychology, is an intermediate psychotherapist, a national Class-Ⅱcounseling psychologist, and a full-time psychotherapist in the clinical psychology department of Xinhua Hospital. The theme of this lecture is “See the Child, See Yourself, Being a Smart Parent.” Other parents and teachers from the Pudong, Puxi, and Lingang campuses watched it online simultaneously.
Dr. Wang opened the lecture with two questions: What kind of parents do children need? What kind of parent are you going to be? Through the famous “Rhesus Monkey Experiment” and the “Still Face Experiment” of Harvard University, Dr. Wang helped parents and teachers understand that their children like parents who can empathize and interact with them. Through vivid examples, she analyzed how children may have learning ability problems, social-emotional problems, and self-control problems. The question of “what kind of children do parents need” lets parents think about their parenting methods and encourage parents to learn to accept their children. She also provided parents with practical strategies to control emotions, control anger, and express emotions.
Ms. Liu Fang, middle and primary school vice principal, shared her personal experiences, which stuck a chord with a lot of parents. She emphasized that personal growth can be perceived as a process of self-recognition. We should be patient and give children time to learn and know themselves. As parents, it is important to be smart and learn how to teach your children. She suggested that parents should focus on “What I can do to help” instead of demanding too much from their children.
Finally, Ms. Zhang Yi, director of the Puxi Campus grades 1-3, summarized the whole lecture: both parents and teachers need to learn psychology knowledge, understand the motives and reasons behind their children’s behaviors, to reflect on and adjust their own words and actions, to care, and to improve themselves together with their children in love and wisdom!
After the event, the parents said that it was a collision of thoughts and the soul’s awakening, which benefited them considerably. They look forward to more such activities to learn more ways of guiding and educating the children. As Director Zhang Yi said at the end, “There is no perfect parent or teacher in the world, but we can become wise parents and wise teachers if we keep learning. Let us accompany our children to grow up in love and wisdom!”
