Middle and Primary School Math Department: G7 “Frayer model"—A Study Guide for Independent Learners
Independent learning skills have always been a critical focus for the school. Throughout the new semester, various subjects hosted multiple events to boost the students’ autonomous learning skills. For example, the 7th-grade math group has introduced the Frayer model. To understand the Frayer model, students analyzed how they organized their past workindependently. The Frayer model incorporates a simple summary of the knowledge or a mind map. Using a format with four squares, students learn to check, analyze, and define specific structures or ideas. Students use this method to understand a certain concept in math better. At the same time, teachers can also check students’ understanding of the topic. Students can use their own study goals to create all different kinds of Frayer models, including but not limited to averages, digits, absolute values, and more. Their works demonstrate their clear and straightforward understanding of the topic, demonstrate their independent learning abilities. After learning about the Frayer model, students have applied these methods into their studying and will benefit their future by having a solid basis.
