Grade 11 Assembly: The Bloomsbury Cat

November 4, 2021

“Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.”-Virginia Woolf

On the assembly on October 29, the Bloomsbury Cat club shared their stories. The Bloomsbury Cat is a Club that aims to support students who specialize in humanities through a means of providing creative opportunities on their official WeChat account. Inspired by the Bloomsbury group of the 20th Century which was a coterie of English writers, philosophers, and artists, the club strives for the representation of humanity students and promoting awareness. With the three subjects of English, Chinese, and History, each has distinctive activities provided for members.

For students with creative-writing talents in Chinese, English, and History, the Club invites submissions of poetry, prose, short stories, and short articles that other people can appreciate and view. In addition to accepting submissions, the Bloomsbury Cat plans to provide help to students taking humanity subjects. The division for Chinese is gathering material for a study guide that accumulates all the essentials catered towards exams, and, for History, they are hosting writing workshops to help students improve their academic writing skills.

What distinguishes the Bloomsbury Cat from other clubs is their values, primarily of publicity and reflection. The Club allows people passionate towards the humanities to express their ideas on a platform, which does not get as much attention as, perhaps, STEM subjects. What’s more is that, in addition to their creative posts on their WeChat account, an author’s note is provided. The author’s note allows readers to understand the author’s intention and their message, rather than just reading something and disregarding its main intent.
