Grade 6: Celebrating Halloween and Preparation for Midterm Exams—Youth Development Class
On Thursday, October 28, the first class of Youth Development consisted of an interesting and entertaining escape room. In this game, students were supposed to discover the ingredients of a potion to save their teachers, who had become zombies! Students worked together in groups of 3 or 4 to decipher codes, work out mazes, crack mind-racking riddles, and even detect wrongly spelled or misused words! Codes were hidden in every nook and cranny, showing a rather artful zombie face as a representative to every letter of the alphabet. They appeared behind the task cards, on the escape room guide, and even on the other side of the directions for each assignment! The answers were given out after the first class ended with the break-time flying past with students still keen on finishing all the tasks, and they checked their answers scrupulously as each slide slipped down.
After the answers were unveiled and looked over, teachers informed students about preparation for the tests and how to ace on them. They notified students about the importance of getting a good night’s sleep before tests or exams, eating a hearty and nutritious breakfast before setting off to school, and wearing the right amount of apparel (depending on the weather). Teachers also advised them to skip questions that confused them and work on them later after all the others were done, crossed out choices that didn't seem very possible as an answer, and leaving none of the questions blank at all!
Afterwards, the teachers asked questions about scenarios where students acted differently from each other with tests, which method was the most useful, and why it was the most correct way to act in situations. Students passed with flying colors, as the situations got more complex and harder to solve.
Students had great fun and gained helpful advice in these youth development classes. As the students and teachers were both smiling, another two lessons of youth development flew by!
