Grade 8: SHAMUN
On October 15, 2021, SHSID middle school students arrived at the 21stSHAMUN conference in Shanghai, eager to begin their first Model United Nations competition of the semester and compete with other international schools. They were joined by hundreds of other enthusiastic attendees, all of whom were buzzing with excitement. For some students, this may have been their first conference ever. There is no doubt that all SHSID delegates performed superbly at the SHAMUN conference.
Over the course of two days, each student represented a delegate of a nation tasked with proposing and presenting solutions to various issues. In order to do this, the participants needed to cooperate with students from other schools to carry out the procedures necessary for passing a resolution, or the solution to a particular problem. During the second day, students were noticeably more active in their participation as they began to better understand the processes and rules of SHAMUN. Students of SHSID were especially active, either by writing detailed papers or presenting quality speeches to established committees.
In fact, numerous awards were taken home by delegates of SHSID Middle School, including an honorable mention for Andy 8(11), Most Improved Delegate for Aaron 8(2) and Ray 8(4), Outstanding Delegate for Jonathan 8(11), and Best Delegate for Sophia 8(5) and Alex 8(1). While these individual achievements are notable, all the students who attended SHAMUN further developed their leadership skills and resourcefulness through this interactive experience. Despite many delegates commenting that the two days passed by too quickly, it was still more than enough to leave a memorable impression of MUN on all the participants. As thefinalgavel brought the conference to a close, students parted ways with their friends, old and new, vowing to utilize the knowledge they gained into their everyday lives.
