Pudong Campus Grade 2: Cookie Dig

October 20, 2021

In Grade 2 last week, students learned all about fossils and the people who study them. After talking about tools that paleontologists use to complete their digs, students engaged in their own paleontological dig using toothpicks and cookies during the Science class on Thursday.

Our young scientists paired up with partners and created hypotheses about whether or not they would be able to extract the chocolate chip “fossils” from the cookies. Then, they generated a plan of action to remove the fossils. After, they did their best to follow their plan and extract as many fossils as possible. Some preferred a more delicate approach, carefully plucking out the fossils with the pointed end of their “rock pick” tooth pick tool. Others preferred a faster approach, crushing bits of the cookie before pulling out the fossils inside. Regardless of their method, they all found great success and they discovered there were many approaches to extracting their fossils. We wonder what kinds of fossils these young paleontologists will find next. Good job, team!
