Grade 10: Puberty Education

September 6, 2021

On the afternoon of September 1st, the new grade of sophomores spent their first CAS class attending a lecture given by Lingling Lu, a professional counselor, in the Grand Auditorium. The lecture focused on discussing sex education, including conversations about puberty, sexual relationships, and pregnancy protection.

Ms. Lu began by talking about the changes students go through during their teenage years. She explained the things that occur during puberty, exploring physical, emotional, and social changes. The presentation continued by delving further into the sexual feelings and attraction that arise during puberty. Lu invited the students to think about an incredibly difficult question: “What is Love?” She discussed Sternberg’s triangular theory of love, talking about the intimacy, passion, and commitment involved in this complicated feeling. She then analyzed a few case studies to explain the concept of healthy relationships and personal boundaries.

The lecture stressed the importance of consent and talked about its mechanics. Lu also explained the different components of sex, debunking some common myths about this passionate activity. Next, she described how different types of contraception and protection work, showing multiple videos to add more detail. The attending students learned a lot from this informative lecture.
