Puxi Campus Grades 1-3: STEAM Week

STEAM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. This semester, students from grade one to grade three at Puxi Campus have experienced an exciting STEAM week. During the week, students developed their transdisciplinary skills and integrated knowledge of various subjects to complete the projects. Let’s see what they have done!

Grade One

The students in Grade 1 put on their thinking caps this week and took part in our highly anticipated STEAM week from May 30th to June 4th. The students were very fortunate to work with both of their homeroom teachers on this project, as this week-long event incorporated both science and math. The students were tasked with designing and building a model of a landmark building. Let’s see how they did!

On day one, the students used their Science class to learn about many famous landmarks worldwide. This included the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Pyramids of Egypt. They thought about the shapes, structures, and designs. It got their brains working, and they began to think about how they would design their landmark and how they wanted it to look.

On day two, the students began work on planning their landmarks. Once they had decided on a design, the students started to draw up their blueprints. It is a written representation of what their final model would resemble. Working with their math teachers, the students also started measuring their materials and deciding which materials would be most appropriate for their design.

Wednesday and Thursday were dedicated to building their 12-inch models. The students were happy with their blueprints and couldn’t wait to get stuck in. As you can see, the students got very creative with their designs. They were incredibly inventive, resourceful, and came up with some wonderful pieces.

On the last day of the project, the students were finally able to proudly show off their hard work and dedication. The students’ completed models were displayed around the classroom, and their peers were able to walk around and admire their tremendous work. Using a combination of skills they learned across all of the subjects, our students made STEAM week a great success. Good job, Grade 1!

Grade Two

From March 15th to 19th, G2 students had an amazing STEAM week! Within the five days, they dived into a world of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. This week, students undertook a challenging project across different subjects building treehouses. First of all, they worked with partners and made unique designs and beautiful blueprints. Then, using a vast array of materials, they built models and improved their designs. In Math and Computer class, they used AR to measure their creations. During the busy week, students demonstrated and developed a wide range of skills and exhibited great teamwork!

Grade Three

During the STEAM week, carried out on the last week of April, students in third grade uncovered a global issue; there is an enormous amount of clothing waste worldwide. Students worked in groups to design, create, and present outfits made from reused and recycled materials addressing the clothing waste problem. The final presentation was a spectacular classroom fashion show! The third-grade students used skills from a range of subjects to complete the STEAM week activities. They used math skills to read graphs, take measurements, and identify shapes and figures. Knowledge from science class was essential to following the steps of the engineering process and determine the environmental impacts of their creations. Finally, writing and presenting the final product required verbal and technical language skills from both English and Chinese. Not only were the third graders using knowledge from a variety of classes, but they also used vital 21st century learning skills, including critical thinking, problem solving, duties of citizenship, communication, collaboration, and artistic creativity. Great work, third grade!

The week-long STEAM allowed students to have a lot of fun in class and stimulate creativity. They all enjoyed it and learned a lot from it!
