Grade 11: Junior Project Presentation

May 24, 2021

Confident and prepared, the teams of 11th-grade students gathered in their assigned presentation rooms as the bell rang for the end of lunch on May 19th, 2021. The students were about to begin the first round of Junior Project presentations.

This year’s Junior Project was about finding ways to help improve the quality of life in Shanghai. Excitedly, the students shared their discoveries with fellow students and judges in the room. Each team had 12 minutes to present their project and 2 minutes to answer any questions from the judges. Teams were scored accordingly. After the initial round, students walked to the XMT Auditorium, where the top-scoring team from each room presented their projects to the whole grade.

The teams found a great variety of ways to, as students, improve living conditions in Shanghai. Some groups focused on changing the environment around them. For instance, one group aimed to address the necessity to provide women with easily-accessible feminine products during menstruation. The group started by researching the costs of menstruation—the stigma, the “tax” of having to pay for hygiene products, and the diseases that come from not maintaining proper hygiene. The group also conducted surveys to investigate the demand for such products at SHSID. Seeing that many students have a need for feminine-hygiene products, the group decided to put boxes containing tampons and pads in the bathroom stalls. Another group focused on reorganizing and furnishing the school library to make printed resources more accessible to students, as well as to make the learning environment more welcoming and comfortable. Some groups reached out further to make changes to environments or communities outside of school. For instance, one group made further extensions to a club-project podcast called Soap Box, where they discuss and raise awareness on teenage mental issues. Another group reached out to farmers in poorer areas of China, and connected them via online-sales platforms to customers in other cities with greater purchasing power. There was also a group that created an informational WeChat account aimed at raising awareness on the potential danger of birds, who cannot see glass, crashing into windows.

All students had a great time sharing their discoveries and learning about other teams’ projects.
