Professional Development: How to Deal with Students' Negative Emotions
On the afternoon of May 17th, the Xianmian Building Annex was full of teachers from the international division to listen to a lecture on dealing with depression and anxiety given by psychological counselor Ms. Lu.
At the beginning of the lecture, Ms. Lu listed a set of numbers, vividly telling everyone that depression and anxiety are extremely common in modern society, and how many people are deeply troubled by these negative emotions. Amongst the adolescent community, depression and anxiety are also not a new concept. However, how can teachers discover students’ mental-state problems in school? Based on real case studies, Ms. Lu described common observable symptoms of depression and anxiety to teachers. Ms. Lu emphasized that these negative emotions are not necessarily invincible. She introduced a series of methods for teachers to help students relieve depressed and anxious emotions. At the same time, however, she also reminded teachers that, when students have developed a certain psychological disorder, they should seek help from professionals in a timely manner.
A question-and-answer session soon followed the lecture. Everyone all seized this opportunity to raise practical problems they have encountered in their usual work setting. Finally, with a warm round of applause, this profession-development lecture ended successfully.
