Pudong Campus: Learn to Talk, Talk to Learn: Kids’ Talk

May 12, 2021

What is your favorite subject? Why is the subject so important? These are some questions we might frequently encounter during our education. How would our students react to these questions? To reveal the answer, we present you with the first Kids’ Talk of SHSID Pudong campus. On the afternoon of May 11th, all the students and teachers of Pudong campus gathered in the auditorium and immersed themselves in inspirational speeches given by 10 student presenters.

As a schoolwide event, Kids’ Talk provides an opportunity for students to discuss their favorite subjects and share their passion and experience in their learning journey with the rest of our Pudong campus. When the event was first announced in early April, plenty of students from different grades displayed a keen interest in it and plunged into preparation right away. After each homeroom’s auditions, ten classroom representatives were elected from the students’ and teachers’ voting. They became the ten speakers who would address the entire campus on May 11th.

On the Kids’ Talk stage, the speakers turned themselves into confident and effective communicators. With captivating presentation skills, they engaged the audience with their learning journeys in various subjects such as science, math, Chinese, geography, physical education, music, etc. Some students recalled memorable occasions when they were enchanted by science. Some introduced the teacher who constructively altered their perception of Chinese language learning, and others shared the story of how they got over a frustrating PE class and reconstructed their faith and passion for the subject. The speeches were informative and inspiring, offering the speakers’ personal experience while exerting a positive influence in other students’ learning habits and strategies. After presentations, the audience also got an opportunity to express themselves by writing down their reflection on the speeches. And if lucky enough, they would win extra prizes from a lucky draw. At the end of the event, every speaker received a trophy for their excellent presentations, which was not only a recognition of their great effort but also an impetus for further achievements as well.

As a forum, Kids’ Talk offers a platform for our students to speak out on their academic learning. However, Kids’ Talk is much more than just a forum, as is shown by the main title of this event, which says, “Learn to talk, talk to learn.” We believe Kids’ Talk could be a mind opener that can spread ideas, spark passion, and navigate students towards creative and sustainable learning. In this complicated and ever-changing world, education is no longer just about teaching knowledge and skills. It should be centered on equipping the youth with a compass and tools to adapt to the future, and even more, thrive in the future. Through events like Kids’ Talk, students learn to interact respectfully and constructively with others, to appreciate different perspectives and values, and ultimately, they attain the motivation and the will to find their way. While achieving these, they step forward to take responsibility of their own lives as well as the world around them. This, we believe, is how we should prepare our students to shape a brighter future.
