Middle and Primary School English Department: Reading and Learning

May 11, 2021

Grade 1 English class had the chance to read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, promoting a loving, caring, and kind environment within our classrooms. It is a story about a little girl named Chrysanthemum. Unfortunately, Chrysanthemum’s classmates were not very agreeable about her name. Our students each had their hearts to take care of and were instructed to crumple up their "hearts" every time they felt that her feelings were hurt. It was a fantastic lesson on how our words and actions can affect people. The students then used their artistic skills to turn themselves into chrysanthemums. We also began to learn about poetry. The students started by learning about acrostic poetry, where each letter of a word is written down the side of a page, and a word, phrase, or sentence stands for each letter. The theme for our acrostic poems was our names. What amazing and positive things would you write in your poem about yourself?
