Middle School Biology Department:7th Graders Dissect Hearts and Lungs

April 21, 2021

Students learned all about different human body systems in science this school year. To have a better understanding of the anatomy of internal organs, the science teachers arranged a series of dissections, such as dissections of the heart, lungs, kidney, cow eye, brain, etc. On April 15th, students went to the lab room to dissect hearts and lungs. The dissections were guided by the science teachers, with the lab report providing more exact steps. They prepared by donning gloves and goggles as usual, then proceeded to cut open the heart and observe the four chambers. They identified relevant blood vessels, such as the aorta and pulmonary arteries.

Students also learned to distinguish between the left side and right side of the heart. The most impressive dissection, however, was that of the lungs. When they pumped air into the lungs, they expanded and turned a light pink color! Next, when they cut a small piece of lung tissue and put it into the water, it floated. Air bubbles could be observed when squeezed. It was mind-boggling. This dissection allowed students to truly understand the structure and function of the heart and lungs, and as always, they eagerly look forward to the next dissection.
