Pudong Campus Grades 1-5: Explore Enchanting China—Chinese Culture Week
As the flowers bloom in this beautiful season, the annual Chinese culture week has come once again. From April 20 to April 24 of this year, students at SHSID Pudong Campus had various activities to celebrate this annual event. Let us review Chinese Culture Week and explore enchanting China together!
Grade 1:
In Chinese class on Tuesday, the first-grade students brought their e-books made on their iPads and shared their favorite traditional Chinese festivals. On Wednesday, the children had a chance to create and decorate their kite and enjoy the fun of traditional Chinese games in the beautiful spring atmosphere. Students enjoyed listening to the beautiful words in ancient Chinese poems during class on Thursday and even practiced singing them! Students and teachers alike were enchanted by the splendid beauty of Chinese poetry!
Grade 2:
The second graders learned to sing “Grandma’s Penghu Bay,” “Song of Seven Sons,” and other popular classic songs to delve into the intense feelings of homesickness that can occur during class on Tuesday. In addition, they recited different classical poems in different Chinese dialects to feel the rhythmic beauty of poetry. On Thursday, the students worked as groups to make posters about the beautiful scenery and delicious food in their hometowns to share their happy memories from home.
Grade 3:
During Chinese culture week, the third-grade students strolled through the mystical realm of Chinese poetry by reading, writing, and reciting various ancient Chinese poems. They made posters to introduce different poets and copied their favorite texts with hard pens, which showed their writing skill of hard-pen Chinese calligraphy that they have learned this semester. In addition, grade three carried out the activity of “painting fans to feel spring” in their art class. All the students were holding their fans and could not put them down!
Grade 4:
The fourth-grade Chinese culture week started with idyllic poetry. A song-poem “Qingpingle · Cunju” brought everyone to a leisure village, and with this scene in mind, the students began to draw their paper kites using their imagination. After that, the students shared their video projects on “If the collection talks” to introduce the history of different museum collections. Everyone learned more about Chinese history and appreciated the rich mystery of Chinese culture through these activities!
Grade 5:
A cartoon titled “Mindless and Unhappy” initiated the fifth-grade Chinese culture week. After watching this cartoon, the students chose clips for impromptu dubbing and performed a new version of “Mindless and Unhappy” with creative ingenuity. Afterward, the teachers selected hundreds of representative Chinese allegorical sayings for everyone to guess and learn. Students then could select their favorite ones to make unique bookmarks! Meanwhile, the students also watched the wonderful video series of “Guardian of National Treasure” to learn about the history of Dake Ding, the treasure of Shanghai Museum, as well as the recent hot spot—Sanxingdui, revealing the mysterious veil of one of Sanxingdui’s representative cultural relics—the Bronze Mask.
Simultaneously while exploring enchanting China, SHSID Pudong Campus also held a lecture on exploring bronzes—“A Day in the Life of the King”, which led students into the history and the beauty of Chinese characters. Each grade also displayed various works on different topics, such as “The Most Beautiful Place in China” photography exhibition, 100 reasons that I love Shanghai, and China’s new “four great inventions,” so that students can feel the charm of Chinese culture and stimulate their love for it. On the last day of Chinese culture week, all the students and teachers dressed in Chinese traditional costumes and went on a journey through the ancient town of Xinchang in Shanghai. The children enjoyed wandering in the ancient streets, cobbled stone roads, and ancient bridges. After the tour, each student drew the beautiful scenery of the town and had the opportunity to make a real postcard for tourists to pick up in the tourist center of the town!
Chinese Culture Week has come to a successful conclusion by delivering a rich and colorful cultural experience to the students. Everyone actively participated in various activities as a learner, experiencer, and disseminator of Chinese culture. We expect that students will enjoy continuing their journey of exploring enchanting China in the future!
