Primary School Subjects Department: G1 The Month of Cultures
During March in Social Studies, our first-grade students have been learning about different cultures from around the world. We kicked off the month by finding out what the word culture means. Culture can include the shared language, food, clothing, currency, and flag of a group of people. Our students used their clever imaginations to create their own cultures, complete with their own sports and festivals.
We learned about different currencies from around the world and did coin rubbings of coins from various countries.
The first culture that our students delved into was the country of Ireland. They found out why it is known as the Emerald Isle and that they play a type of football called Gaelic.
The highlight of the month was when some of our students’ parents came in to talk about their own culture. The students were very excited and listened intently as they learned about cultures in different countries such as Australia, Iran, Canada, etc.
We finished off our busy month of culture with our Geo Fair. Each classroom in the Grade 1 hallway was transformed into a different country. With their passports in hand, our students traveled across the world and experienced even more cultures. The students must be tired after their long journeys!
