Grades 9-10: CAS - First-Aid Training
On March 24, 2021, SHSID freshmen and sophomores had their first-aid training during CAS class at school.
Every homeroom had a few representatives who gave a lesson on how to react correctly during times of emergency situations. CPR includes performing breast compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing on others who are not breathing. The representatives first demonstrated how to perform the chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth breathing on a human body prop, then people were called upon respectively to try and perform the aid. AED is a device used to shock patients who have a loss of heartbeat. It was emphasized that before performing any operations, making sure the operator is in the right position and using the right amount of force is essential.
Some additional safety precautions were also introduced. When an accident happens, people should know how to calmly dial the emergency number. They should address clearly to the emergency-response operator who was hurt and where they were hurt, so the ambulance will know what to bring and can arrive to the location of the accident quickly. When someone is bruised, they should clean their hands before cleaning their bruises to prevent bacterial infection. The first thing to do when someone vomits is to take them to the clinic instead of worrying about cleaning up. When stung by a bee, the person should first get away from the bee to prevent further stings, etc.
The students then watched a video of an instructor demonstrating how to perform first-aid. Overall, this was a very informative and useful intro-session.
