March 22, 2021

From March 18 to March 19, 2021, Ms. Wang, from Yuyin She, presented two fascinating Beijing Opera lectures to Grade 7 students of native Chinese classes. She specially introduced the characteristics and classification of the role of Chou. The whole event was full of laughter and applause.

During the lecture, the teacher introduced that the role of Chou can be split into Wen Chou and Wu Chou, while Wen Chou can be further separated into Paodai Chou, who plays the civil and military officials, and Fangjin Chou, who plays the writers and poets, as well as Chayi Chou, who plays the working people, etc. To help the students perceive the witty and exaggerated performances of the Chou actors on the stage more intuitively, the teacher lively played many classic videos, such as “All Living Beings in the Fa Men,” “Capturing Saburo Alive,” “Qiu Jiang,” “Picking Up the Jade Bracelet,” “The Phoenix Returns to the Nest,” to name a few. The students could not help applauding while watching the clips. From time to time, they burst into laughter, and some of them even imitated the actors appropriately. The atmosphere at the scene was warm and lively.

At the end of the lecture, the teacher encouraged the students to try the stage speech of Chou characters through the opera “Flower Lantern.” The students read it with neat rhythm and interest, and several students stepped onto the stage to perform this part in measured tones, vividly showing the charm of Beijing Opera.

This activity combined teaching with fun, making students realize the enduring power of Beijing Opera and the uniqueness of the role Chou.
