Grade 6: Math Project Presentation—Dream House
Last semester, Grade 6 students learned about scale in math class. Under the advice and help of a parent who is an interior designer, teachers carefully designed a math project, divided into three parts, to apply these skills. For the first part, students calculated the measurements for the actual floor and wall area of a 2D apartment scale drawing. Based on this, they gave a decoration budget. For the second part, students used various architectural symbols to design the 2D version of their dream home. The third part was the winter homework over the holiday. Students made their 2D drawings into 3D models. Through collecting materials, painstakingly cutting and assembling, and finally making the graphic design on a piece of paper into a three-dimensional model, the students thought this process was amazing! After completing many steps, every student was satisfied with their work. The students made a video to show their production process, reflect on their experience, and show off the exquisite final results.
At the beginning of the second semester, the math teachers in Grade 6 showed the videos taken by the students in math class. In the video, you can see that some of the students’ houses are grand and beautiful, some are cute and delicate, some have huge slides and bubble pools, and others have high-tech solar panels and ecological gardens. Everyone was very impressed with each other’s masterpieces. In the end, each math class voted to select two students who finished the most outstanding work to speak on behalf of the class in the youth development class.
On Thursday, March 18, in the youth development class, the sixth graders gave a keynote speech on the Math Project “my dream home” in the auditorium of the primary school. 28 students introduced their works. Each of them full of confidence. The house they designed was really exquisite, beautiful, and unique. Some students used an art knife to cut wood and make a house of all wood. With the surrounding grass and swimming pool, it looks both natural and modern. Some students designed and created their furniture using 3D printers. Some students said that through this math project, they realized the happiness brought by design, especially the process of turning the design into a real object by themselves, which was a great sense of achievement. Each student’s speech and presentation were wonderful and won applause from the audience. Finally, through the scoring from teachers and student judges, six students stood out. They won the prize and were presented with certificates.
This math project has got the active participation and support of all the students in Grade 6. The school will continue to create more opportunities for students to feel the beauty of mathematics.
