Grades 9-10: First-Aid Training Program

March 15, 2021

On March 9th, some freshmen and sophomores spent their lunchtime attending a first-aid training program hosted by a 12th-grade student here at SHSID. Two students were chosen from each homeroom class, and they gathered in Room 213 of the Zhentao Building to learn about some crucial first-aid techniques.

The program first went over how to respond to certain medical emergencies. Students learned about what to do when someone’s heart stops and when someone overdoses. The lecturer explained when to call an ambulance and how to take care of the patient while waiting for the medical professionals to arrive.

Students were then taught how to do CPR, and the lecturer described the detailed process regarding the procedure. Students learned that you need to compress the chest down at least 5 centimeters, doing it at a pace of about 100-120 compressions per minute with 30 in one set. They were also taught that, while doing mouth to mouth, you tip the patient’s chin upwards, squeeze the nose shut, and breathe into the patient’s mouth. If you see the chest move up while you exhale into the patient’s mouth, it is effective. If you don’t see that happening, you should put the patient’s head back into position and readjust it. Lastly, students were given some useful tips, like “if an AED, a type of defibrillator, is available, use it as soon as possible as it is much more effective than CPR.”

This well-organized first-aid training program taught students some incredibly critical medical skills, and it emphasized the importance of equipping oneself with the ability to respond to emergencies.
